What’s Next: Gerrymandering and the SCOTUS’ Latest Decision
In another blow to our democracy, the Supreme Court just handed down a ruling that upholds partisan gerrymandering, barring federal judges from overruling unfair district lines.
The SCOTUS’ latest decision is an egregious affront to voters and a serious dismissal of the millions of activists who’ve fought to provide equal representation for voters regardless of gender, race, economic status, or political affiliation.
It’s clear that the SCOTUS doesn’t care about protecting the rights of US voters, so now it’s our job to protect ourselves. This starts with electing progressive Democrats who will fight for fair maps and fair districts.
Two months ago, Run for Something launched the Grassroots Redistricting Project with Swing Left and Arena. This campaign was created to undo what Republican legislators have been doing to district maps for years by voting them out of office and replacing them with young progressive leaders.
Beginning in November, gubernatorial and state legislative elections will determine which party controls redistricting for the next decade. Right now, Republicans currently have the power to draw more congressional districts than Democrats: 179 to 76. And let’s face it, with the latest ruling from the Supreme Court, these numbers matter more than ever.
Now’s the time to channel your anger into action and get involved. Run, donate, volunteer — find a way to halt gerrymandering in its tracks and fight for each and every voter.
P.S. State legislatures are the first step in ensuring bipartisan maps, but it certainly does not end there. Another way to get involved? Sign up to run for a local election authorities seat! RFS, along with Let America Vote are recruiting local leaders to run for seats like county commissioner and city clerk as another way of protecting the rights of voters and making sure they have access to the ballot.
Today the Supreme Court royally screwed us; let’s not take it lying down. Mobilize and fight back today.
