Run for Something (RFS) today unveiled our first wave of endorsements of the new year, featuring a dynamic group of 60 candidates, including 16 alumni, hailing from 21 states across the nation. These inspiring leaders are running for crucial elected roles in state legislatures, municipal offices, and education positions dedicated to safeguarding reproductive freedoms, combating unwarranted book bans, ensuring equitable access to the ballot, and so much more.

April Van Dyke

Judge, Department 1, Humboldt County, CA

Primary Date: Mar 5, 2024; General Date: Nov 5, 2024

April is a candidate for the position of Superior Court Judge in Humboldt County. With a strong commitment to her community, she is dedicated to making Humboldt County an even better place to call home. Despite being labeled as an outsider or a newcomer, April takes pride in her unique perspective. Growing up in a humble background as the daughter of a mechanic and a schoolteacher, she understands the value of hard work and determination.

Being the first lawyer in her family, April’s passion for justice led her to represent clients who couldn’t afford legal representation after graduating from law school. Her extensive experience in public defense exposed her to the flaws within the legal system and sparked her determination to uphold fairness. Witnessing firsthand the gaps in equal treatment, April is committed to promoting equality, inclusion, and honesty in the courtroom.

April’s vision for Humboldt County encompasses bringing a restorative justice and mental health program to the community. She aims to address the disparity in sentencing for individuals of different races, working towards closing this gap. With her dedication and unique insight, April Van Dyke aspires to ensure that everyone receives the justice they deserve.

Chinua Rhodes

School Board, Area 5, Sacramento, CA

Chinua is a dedicated community leader and advocate for educational equity. He currently holds the position of Trustee for Area 5 on the Sacramento City Unified Board of Education. Raised in South Sacramento, Rhodes has firsthand knowledge of the challenges faced by the local public school system. Drawing on his personal experience, he actively works to address the needs of his community.

During his time as a school board trustee, Chinua has initiated impactful programs. Notably, he raised the Trans flag to symbolize his district’s commitment to inclusivity in the face of societal obstacles. His goal is to create a safe and supportive environment where everyone feels acknowledged and valued. Chinua has also played a leading role in renaming three schools to promote cultural diversity and respect. These schools now bear the names Miwok Middle School, Suy:u Elementary, and Umoja International Academy.

Beyond his policy work, Rhodes actively engages in community events. He strongly believes in fostering positive role models and providing leadership opportunities for youth in the area. Rhodes’ service on the Sacramento City Unified Board of Education highlights his unwavering dedication to educational equity, community involvement, and the creation of conducive learning environments.

Quemars Ahmed

City Council, At-Large, La Canada Flintridge, CA

Quemars, a native of La Cañada Flintridge, has been actively involved in his community from a young age, dedicating his time to volunteering with esteemed organizations such as the YMCA. Following his high school graduation, Quemars pursued his passion for fairness and equality by attending the UCLA School of Law, where he specialized in constitutional law. Notably, he made history as the first Muslim editor-in-chief of the UCLA Law Review.

Throughout his career as an attorney, Quemars has committed himself to public service, focusing on advocacy and education. Leveraging his extensive knowledge of constitutional law, he has provided invaluable assistance to electoral campaigns, safeguarded the right to vote, and championed individual freedoms. Furthermore, Quemars has collaborated with local conservation groups to protect the environment, our cherished parks, and promote clean air quality.

In addition to his legal endeavors, Quemars has also contributed to the education sector as a substitute teacher at LCUSD. Now, he seeks to spearhead positive change in his hometown. Recognizing the need for a revitalized city government, Quemars aims to address the challenges facing La Cañada Flintridge. He firmly believes that the prevailing stagnation has resulted in lawsuits, an escalating cost of living, particularly impacting the younger and more senior members of the community, and a concerning misallocation of resources.

If elected, Quemars pledges to prioritize transparency and accountability within city government, enhance housing affordability, and meticulously safeguard the environment, ensuring that residents can enjoy optimal health and prosperity. Chris Ochoa

City Council, District 1, Hesperia, CA

Chris is a dedicated community servant who has spent significant time working on the frontlines of the COVID pandemic, within correctional facilities, on the streets of the High Desert, and in treatment clinics. With a passion for public health, Chris fearlessly delivers essential services to underserved locations that many others avoid. As a father, son, brother, uncle, and community member, Chris is deeply committed to making a positive impact on the lives of those around him.

Chris’s motivation to enter the race stems from his unwavering belief in equality and justice. While researching his city’s government as a student, he came across the United States v. Hesperia case, which deeply affected him. The discovery that his local government had passed an unconstitutional ordinance that targeted and evicted Latinos and African Americans from their homes struck a personal chord. Recognizing that this was an attack on people like himself, his family, and his friends, Chris felt compelled to take action.

Hesperia’s pressing needs have been neglected for far too long. The community faces challenges such as deteriorating roads, limited social services, inadequate infrastructure, a dearth of well-paying jobs, an affordable housing crisis, environmental neglect, and inadequate access to healthcare and higher education. In response, Chris is determined to confront these issues head-on by focusing on investment in Community, Healing, Restoration, Innovation, and Solutions.

Seeking to leave a lasting positive impact for future generations, Chris firmly believes that meaningful change can be achieved by working together. By uniting as a community, Hesperia can become a shining example in the Victor Valley, with progress that aligns with the aspirations of its residents.

Walter Garcia

State House, District 43, CA

Primary Date: Mar 5, 2024; General Date: Nov 5, 2024

Walter is a native of the Northeast San Fernando Valley, born to hardworking Mexican immigrant parents who sought to achieve the American Dream. With a strong commitment to his community, Walter is running for California State Assembly (District 43) drawing from his personal and professional experiences addressing critical issues such as homelessness and housing, environmental justice, public safety, and affordable health care. After completing his education in local public schools, Walter earned degrees from Brown University and the Northwestern Pritzker School of Law, becoming the first in his family to accomplish high school, college, and law school graduation. Public service has always been Walter’s passion, having had the honor of working alongside notable figures like President Barack Obama, U.S. Senator Kamala Harris, California Attorney General Rob Bonta, and many more. This experience, combined with his ties to the working class, uniquely equips Walter to make an immediate impact in office, leveraging his governmental expertise at the local, state, and national levels.

Gracie Torres

County Board of Supervisors, District 1, Riverside County, CA

Gracie is a dedicated professional in the field of water quality and compliance. She holds the distinction of being the youngest and first immigrant Latina to be elected as Vice-President on Western Municipal Water District’s Board of Directors. In this role, Gracie focuses on promoting transparency, improving water quality and conservation efforts, and fostering job creation.

Alongside her commitment to public service, Gracie is a co-founder of IEWORKS, an organization that has successfully secured $1.5 million in funding for water and wastewater workforce development projects. In addition, she serves on the boards of several prominent organizations, including Inland SoCal United Way, Operation New Hope, Hispanic Coalition for Small Businesses, and Center for Community Action and Environmental Justice.

Gracie’s dedication to education is evident through her establishment of the Beca Angelita scholarship. Named after her abuelita, this scholarship aims to support high school students of color who are interested in pursuing STEM fields.

Gracie’s educational background includes a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and a master’s degree in environmental science from California State University, San Bernardino. Currently, she is in the final stages of completing her Doctorate in Public Administration at Cal Baptist University. Gracie, along with her husband Eric, is proud to be raising their three children in Riverside.

COLORADO

Kyra deGruy Kennedy

State House, District 30, CO

Kyra is a seasoned professional with a decade of experience in policy change and progressive organizing. Her passion for creating a better future for her daughter, and all children, drives her to run for State Representative. With a focus on clean air, reducing gun violence, and improving public education, Kyra aims to create a safe and nurturing community for everyone.

Throughout her career, Kyra has played a critical role in the passing of more than 50 state policies. Notably, she worked on the bill that established the right to abortion in Colorado, demonstrating her commitment to reproductive rights. Additionally, Kyra has worked on legislation aimed at preventing dangerous individuals from accessing firearms, highlighting her dedication to promoting safety within our communities.

In addition to her policy work, Kyra has also made significant contributions as a leader in progressive organizations. Through her leadership, she has supported the successful passage of several ballot initiatives, including funding for her county’s public school system. Furthermore, Kyra has provided mentorship to nearly 100 young individuals seeking to channel their personal experiences into positive change.

With her wealth of experience and a heartfelt dedication to making a difference, Kyra is determined to continue fighting for a better future as State Representative. Her unwavering commitment to her community is a testament to her ability to drive meaningful change.

Angelica Salinas

County Commissioner, District 1, Routt County, CO

Angelica is a dedicated community leader and advocate who aspires to become a County Commissioner in order to create a prosperous future for all residents of Routt County. With a background in nonprofit executive work, business, and youth development, Angelica brings a wealth of experience to her campaign. Additionally, Angelica serves on multiple boards, coaches youth sports, and volunteers extensively, earning recognition as a local 20 Under 40 leader in Routt County.

Rebekah Stewart

State House, District 30, CO

Rebekah is a therapist with a strong background in the disability community, where she has served as a Medicaid provider for the majority of her career. Currently, she proudly represents a significant portion of House District 30 as a city councilor in Lakewood.

With a profession in music therapy spanning a decade, Rebekah is passionate about finding innovative solutions to help individuals thrive and lead fulfilling lives. This same approach guides her work on the City Council, and she is dedicated to continuing this approach at the State Capitol.

Rebekah’s decision to run for the State House stems from her firsthand experience on the City Council. Luisa Santos

School Board, District 9, Miami-Dade County, FL

As the youngest-ever elected member of the school board, she has brought a fresh perspective to the 3rd largest school district in the nation. Recognized as the Young Entrepreneur of the Year by the Florida SBA, Luisa has demonstrated her innovative spirit and entrepreneurial mindset. Kimberly Jean

County Commissioner, District 5, Broward County, FL

Kimberly is a compassionate and adaptable leader with a keen understanding of urgent community issues. With firsthand experience in interacting with law enforcement, the unhoused population, local government, and families, she brings a practical approach to addressing the challenges faced by District 5 and Broward County.

Motivated by personal experiences, including parenting a non-speaking son on the Autism spectrum and the loss of her mother and sister to breast cancer, Kimberly is well-equipped to address the pressing concerns of the community. She is particularly dedicated to tackling issues such as the high cost of living and housing, transportation problems, and the need to strengthen public safety and infrastructure against climate change.

Kimberly firmly believes in the importance of diverse representation and is passionate about amplifying the voices of retail workers, students, middle and low-income families, municipal workers, and individuals with disabilities. Recognizing the urgency of these matters, she emphasizes the need for swift action. These aren’t simply policy matters; they have a direct impact on the lives of Broward County residents.

ILLINOIS

Arad Boxenbaum

State House, District 83, IL

Arad is an activist and advocate running for Illinois State Representative in the 83rd District Democratic Primary on March 19th, 2024. With a strong focus on gun violence prevention, pro-choice initiatives, and LGBTQ+ equality, Arad has been actively working to bring positive change to the Chicagoland area. Currently serving as Vice President on the Geneva Library Board and having collaborated with four members of Congress, Arad brings years of experience and expertise to the table.

In their role at Moms Demand Action’s Illinois chapter, Arad played a key leadership role, working alongside Students Demand Action to create comprehensive advocacy plans. This led to hundreds of dedicated Moms Demand Action volunteers converging on Springfield to directly lobby elected leaders on three crucial bills aimed at curbing gun violence and ensuring safer streets.

Arad’s commitment to community extends beyond gun violence prevention. They have been appointed to the prestigious Kane County Climate Action Planning Team, demonstrating a strong eagerness to contribute to effective climate action for the betterment of future generations.

With over seven years of experience in politics and government, Arad brings a wealth of expertise. Having served as a campaign manager and field organizer for successful political campaigns, they have also lent their talents to non-profit organizations and advocacy groups, helping them develop and implement effective advocacy strategies.

Arad excels in communication and organization, with a commendable track record of building strong coalitions and mobilizing grassroots support. As a candidate for Illinois State Representative, Arad Boxenbaum offers a fresh perspective, innovative strategies, and a visionary approach to progress in the 83rd District.

INDIANA

Thomas Horrocks

State House, District 62, IN

Thomas, a candidate for state representative in Indiana, is driven by a strong belief that the citizens of his state deserve a better future. Coming from a background as an everyday Hoosier, Thomas understands firsthand the challenges of carving out a successful life. He is a proud product of public education and is the first in his family to graduate from college. Together with his wife Adriane, they are working hard to support their blended family, including their children who are navigating the public school system and college.

With a mission to help individuals, families, and communities thrive, Thomas has dedicated nearly a decade of his life to serving Hoosiers as a church pastor and military chaplain. Through his work, he gained a deep understanding of the systemic issues impacting those he served. Recognizing the limitations of charity alone, Thomas realized the need for meaningful policy change to address these challenges.

Motivated by his passion for making a difference in public policy, Thomas is running to represent Indiana House District 62. He is determined to bring about impactful change and is tired of the single-party rule in Indiana that prioritizes powerful special interests and culture wars over the needs of Hoosiers.

Joel Levi

State Senate, District 20, IN

Joel, a native of Anderson, Indiana, is a passionate advocate for healthcare and child safety. After completing his studies at Anderson University, he and his wife, Megan, settled in Nashville, Tennessee before returning to their hometown in 2020 with their son Mitchell.

Both Megan and Joel have always been deeply committed to the healthcare field. Megan serves as a nurse practitioner at Community Health, while Joel plays a critical role as a pharmacy technician in the Coumadin Clinic and Outpatient Pharmacy at Riverview Health in Noblesville.

Motivated by their desire to create a better Indiana for future generations, Joel has taken up the mantle by running for Indiana State Senate. His primary focus is ensuring the safety of Hoosier children, starting with their well-being at school. Joel firmly believes that enacting sensible gun laws is the most effective means to achieve this goal.

Should Joel be elected to the Indiana State Senate, he plans to prioritize bipartisan collaboration, aiming to bridge the divide and work with Democrats and Republicans alike. His particular attention will be devoted to finding common ground on issues related to the Second Amendment while also advocating for comprehensive background checks at gun shows and for third-party sales.

By championing these measures, Joel strives to create a more secure environment for all Hoosier children and cultivate a culture of safety within the state.

MASSACHUSETTS

Angus Abercrombie

School Committee, Belmont, MA

Primary Date: Apr 2, 2024; General Date: Apr 2, 2024

Angus is a dedicated candidate running for the School Committee seat in Belmont, MA. With a focus on addressing budget shortfalls, empowering students and families, and tackling critical mental health needs, Angus brings a grounded perspective and an approachable demeanor to the committee. Having graduated from Belmont’s schools in 2022 and having grown up in town, he understands the unique challenges students face in their educational environments.

Beyond his academic achievements, Angus is a true community advocate. As a lifelong resident of Belmont, he has volunteered for local conservation and education organizations, serving his town with passion and dedication. Angus has also played an active role in non-profit organizations, serving on the steering committee to ensure young voices are heard in local government meetings.

Currently studying political communication and economics at Emerson College, Angus is actively involved in shaping education policies. He serves on the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee, contributing valuable insights to curriculum development.

As a member of Belmont’s representative Town Meeting, Angus has worked on a diverse range of issues, from commercial zoning reform to special education funding. Notably, he is the only candidate in his race who has successfully pushed policies through the town’s legislature, demonstrating his effectiveness and commitment to creating positive change.

If elected on April 2nd, Angus will make history as the youngest ever and the only LGBTQ+ member of Belmont’s School Committee. He is determined to bring fresh perspectives and inclusive leadership to the committee, ensuring that all students have equal opportunities for success.

Kevin C. Kalkut

State House, Norfolk 9th District, MA

Primary Date: Sep 17, 2024; General Date: Nov 5, 2024

Kevin is a dedicated public servant with over 7 years of experience in various roles within his hometown of Norfolk, MA. He began his journey in local government as a member of the Norfolk Planning Board and later successfully ran for a seat on the Select Board. Currently serving his sixth year on the Select Board, with half of that time as Chair, Kevin also contributes his expertise to the Norfolk County Advisory Board and the Mass Transit Advisory Committee.

In 2022, Kevin proved his passion for public service by running for State Representative in his district. Despite facing a formidable challenge with a nearly 30-year single-party hold on the office, Kevin came impressively close to flipping the seat in the general election, falling short by just 0.87% or 360 votes. Undeterred by this outcome, Kevin recently announced his campaign for the same seat in the 2024 elections, eager to #FinishTheJob in a different political landscape.

As a candidate, Kevin prioritizes addressing key issues that directly affect the lives of the people in the 9th Norfolk District. His focus includes improving access to mental health care, advocating for more affordable housing options, reducing the financial burden on residents through increased state funding, and lowering the out-of-pocket costs of childcare. These priorities reflect Kevin’s commitment to making a positive impact on his community.

Outside of his professional endeavors, Kevin cherishes spending quality time with his family. He and his wife Erica are the proud parents of three energetic boys: Colin (11), Ryan (9), and Owen (6). Kevin actively supports his children’s interests by coaching their sports teams and, on a personal note, he is an avid fan of smoking brisket whenever an opportunity arises.

With his extensive experience in public service and his dedication to improving the lives of the people he represents, Kevin is a formidable candidate who aspires to foster positive change and create opportunities for the residents of his district.

Alec Lebovitz

Select Board, Brookline, MA

Alec is a dedicated member of the Brookline community, residing in Coolidge Corner for many years. As a Town Meeting Member, he has played a crucial role in advocating for new bylaws and important warrant articles that address key areas such as financial management, public health, and housing affordability. Originally moving to Brookline as a student with his partner, Cat, Alec felt compelled to actively contribute to local government in order to bring about positive change for the community. Consequently, he is wholeheartedly committed to establishing a sense of opportunity and stability for all residents of Brookline.

Professionally, Alec has established himself as a policy analyst specializing in state and federal Medicaid policies. With a deep understanding of the healthcare system’s safety net, he has witnessed firsthand the profound impact that a compassionate and data-driven approach to public policy can have on the lives of individuals. In running for the Brookline Select Board, Alec aims to champion policies that foster a more affordable, inclusive, and welcoming community for every resident.

Evan MacKay

State Representative, 25th Middlesex District, MA

Evan is a dedicated professional with a passion for social change. With a background in sociology, Evan has developed a deep understanding of the structural issues affecting our society. Their research has led them to focus on important areas such as tax reform, criminal justice, and government transparency.

Coming from a family dedicated to public service, Evan has been shaped by their parents’ careers in education and healthcare. Growing up in an environment that welcomed and supported over a hundred foster children, Evan became acutely aware of the challenges faced by the foster care system and the issue of housing instability. This firsthand experience continues to drive their advocacy for systemic change.

Recognizing the power of organized labor, Evan has actively participated in their union, the Harvard Graduate Students Union-UAW. As President of their local union, Evan has fought for fair wages, safe and inclusive workplaces, and necessary transformations in higher education. Through their involvement, they have also worked towards bringing greater transparency and accountability to the United Auto Workers.

Now, Evan seeks to represent the 25th Middlesex District in Cambridge, Massachusetts as a state representative. Valuing the community’s progressive values, they prioritize affordable housing, progressive taxation, strong job opportunities, and a government that is transparent and accountable.

James Lewis

City Council, At-Large, Alexandria, VA

Jimmy is a resident of Alexandria, currently living on the West End. With a diverse background and active civic involvement, he brings a wealth of experience to his roles in the community. As the chairperson of the Alexandria Traffic and Parking Board, Jimmy oversees a wide range of transportation and transit matters within the city, including traffic management and parking regulations. In addition, he serves as the Vice President of the West End Business Association (WEBA) and holds various positions within the civic association.

With a passion for politics, Jimmy has been a lifelong Democratic activist. He has held several prominent positions within the party, including Deputy Vice Chair for West End Precinct Operations of the Alexandria Democratic Committee (ADC), Lyles Crouch Precinct Captain (ADC), and Vice Chair of Communications for the LGBT+ Democrats of Virginia. His dedication to public service extends to the national level as well, as he has served as the Issue Advocacy Director for the Young Democrats of America and as President of the Virginia Young Democrats.

In his professional career, Jimmy provides policy support and expertise to pharmaceutical professionals specializing in the care of older adults and individuals in long-term care settings. Working from his office in North Old Town, he offers guidance and assistance to both U.S. and international pharmacists. Prior to this role, Jimmy served as a senior Congressional staffer, bringing his expertise and insights to the offices of two members of the Congressional Black Caucus.

Jimmy’s educational background includes a Bachelor’s degree in biology and international relations from The College of William & Mary, as well as a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College. With his immense experience and commitment to community, Jimmy Lewis continues to make a significant impact in Alexandria and beyond.

Phazhon Nash

City Council, At-Large, Roanoke, VA

Primary Date: Jun 18, 2024; General Date: Nov 5, 2024

Phazhon is a passionate candidate running for Roanoke City Council with a mission to serve the community. Born and raised in Roanoke, he draws inspiration from his single mother, Vietnam War Veteran grandfather, and trailblazing grandmother who was the first Black person and woman elected as Vice President for Roanoke’s local CWA Union.

With a Bachelor of Science in Community Health and a minor in American Government from George Mason University, Phazhon has a strong educational background. Currently working as an Operations Consultant at Carilion Clinic in Emergency Medicine, he ensures that all patients receive high-quality and equitable care across six emergency departments in southwestern Virginia. Committed to continuous growth, he is pursuing a Masters in Population Health Science from the University of Alabama online.

Phazhon’s experience as a Community Outreach Liaison for Delegate Sam Rasoul provided valuable insights into the concerns of Roanoke citizens. Recognizing the need for a councilman who listens, cares, and collaborates to address community issues, Phazhon decided to step forward. Though young, he is well-prepared to serve the citizens of Roanoke and make the city a healthier, safer, more equitable, and livable place for all residents to call home.
