Run for Something (RFS) is proud to announce our July endorsement class, the latest cohort of changemakers ready to meet this pivotal moment in our nation’s history. This month’s 57 endorsees bring us closer to our 2023 goal of endorsing 650 young, diverse, progressive candidates nationwide before the end of the year.

CALIFORNIA

Clay Hale

Board of Education, San José-Evergreen Community College Trustee District 7, San Jose, CA

Election Date: Nov 7, 2023

Clay is a dedicated educator and candidate for the San José-Evergreen Community College District. With an impressive background as a social science high school teacher, community college advisor, and former community college student, Clay is committed to ensuring the well-being and growth of the district.

Having experienced the community college system firsthand as a first-generation college student, Clay understands its transformative power. He has witnessed the positive impact of quality education on the lives of his students, many of whom have gone on to attend San José City College or Evergreen Valley College. Drawing from his personal experiences and professional expertise, Clay will bring a valuable teacher’s perspective to the San José-Evergreen Community College District.

As a candidate, Clay is determined to implement policies that benefit all students. He recognizes the importance of equal opportunities for education and will strive to create an inclusive and supportive environment within the district. COLORADO

Tommy Butler

City Council, Ward 1, Greeley, CO

Election Date: Nov 7, 2023

Tommy has been diligently serving as the Ward 1 representative on the Greeley City Council since 2019. With his dedication and commitment to the community, he is now seeking re-election for another term to continue advocating for the needs of his constituents.

During his first term, Tommy has been instrumental in addressing the pressing issue of affordable housing in Greeley. Recognizing the urgency of the matter, he has actively participated in city council votes to approve various projects that aim to provide affordable housing options. Under his leadership, Greeley has seen the development of over 920 units of truly affordable housing since last year, including the largest Habitat for Humanity development in the state of Colorado. Moreover, Tommy worked tirelessly to expand the G-Hope program, which assists individuals with home down-payment assistance, ultimately enabling more people to live and work in Greeley.

In addition to his unwavering advocacy for affordable housing, Tommy has also prioritized sustainability initiatives within the city. He has consistently pushed for expanded recycling services, which led to the establishment of a glass drop-off recycling program. In its inaugural year, this program successfully recycled an impressive 21.66 tons of glass. Tommy has also been a strong voice in advocating for equitable infrastructure investment. His efforts have resulted in crucial repairs to sidewalks and roads, including securing funding for the renovation of the 5th Street sidewalk and road between 14th and 23rd Avenues.

With his impressive track record of accomplishments, Tommy is determined to continue his advocacy for Northeast Greeley on the City Council. His passion for affordable housing, sustainability, and equitable infrastructure investments make him the ideal candidate to represent the voices and aspirations of the community. Tommy’s re-election will ensure that the interests of Ward 1 residents remain at the forefront of city council decision-making.

Caroline Smith

City Council, Ward 9, New Haven, CT

Caroline is an accomplished local leader dedicated to tackling the various challenges faced by New Haven. With a solid background in community engagement, she has thrown her hat into the ring for the position of Alder of Ward 9. Caroline aims to not only advocate for her neighbors in the Fair Haven and East Rock neighborhoods but also to foster a sense of unity and collaboration among residents across the entire city.

Having resided in New Haven for over a decade, Caroline brings with her a wealth of experience and accomplishments. She is the co-founder of Collab, a renowned nonprofit organization that assists individuals in overcoming obstacles to establish their own businesses. Collab specifically focuses on empowering women, individuals with lower incomes, people of color, and immigrants. Its support has had a transformative impact, aiding hundreds of aspiring entrepreneurs annually in neighborhoods throughout the city.

Additionally, Caroline initiated New Haven Bike Month, an event that has successfully brought residents together to advocate for safer streets and sidewalks accessible to all. Recognizing the need for community resources, she also co-founded aapiNHV, which provides invaluable support and services to the city’s burgeoning Asian community.

If elected as Alder, Caroline will leverage her extensive experience and amplify the voices of New Haven residents on critical issues. Her primary areas of focus include promoting economic opportunities for all, prioritizing safe streets and enhancing residents’ overall quality of life, advocating for climate justice and the green economy, and championing protections for the city’s LGBTQ+ community.

With her proven dedication and commitment, Caroline is well-poised to make a significant difference as Alder of Ward 9 and bring about positive change for the entire New Haven community.

INDIANA

Vincent Aguirre

City Council, Ward 4, Greencastle, IN

Vincent is a dedicated business owner and community advocate who is determined to make a difference in Greencastle, Indiana. With a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from DePauw University and an MBA under his belt, Vincent has a solid educational foundation that has fueled his passion for creativity and leadership. As the owner of Distinct Web Design, Vincent brings his wealth of experience to the table as he collaborates with local businesses and clients across the nation.

Vincent’s commitment to Greencastle is evident through his active involvement in various community organizations. He played a vital role in establishing the 100 Plus Men Who Care and actively contributes to the Area 30 Advisory Board, Ivy Tech Community Council, Temple Lodge 47, and PC CERT. Vincent has also held leadership positions in esteemed organizations such as Mainstreet Greencastle, Putnam County Economic Development, Putnam County Chamber of Commerce, and Family Support Services of West Central Indiana.

Driven by his campaign, Greencastle Forward, Vincent is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for all residents and fostering the growth of local businesses. He firmly believes in prioritizing the needs of the community and ensuring that the local government serves its residents effectively. Vincent’s profound understanding of Greencastle’s unique requirements positions him exceptionally well to lead the 4th Ward and the city towards a brighter future.

Bridget Botkin

City Council, Ward 2, Des Moines, IA

Bridget is a passionate community organizer, dedicated to the art of storytelling. With a background in music and film, she effortlessly weaves her creative pursuits into her career. As a guitarist and vocalist, she actively contributes to the local music scene, connecting with others through the power of music. Additionally, Bridget lends her talents as a freelance artist in the dynamic world of film.

Drawing inspiration from her own life experiences, Bridget firmly believes that the true essence of the north and east sides lies in the diverse cultures that intersect and flourish within their vibrant neighborhoods. She wholeheartedly recognizes that many residents in these areas have felt ignored by the city, creating a shared sentiment that fuels her drive for change.

In light of the transformative events that unfolded in 2020, Bridget made a conscious decision to invest more attention in the city council. Through her research, she uncovered a disheartening reality: the city’s structure not only perpetuates the concentration of wealth among developers and affluent homeowners, but it also inherently restricts access to those seeking to challenge these established systems.

The existing barriers to empowerment enshrined in the city code serve as a direct affront to the stories of resilience and determination that we all strive to create in our lives. Denver Foote

Mayor, Des Moines, IA

Denver (they/them) is a dedicated candidate vying for the position of Des Moines Mayor, with a sincere passion for amplifying the voices of our most underserved communities. With a strong conviction to address pressing issues such as climate change, corporate responsibility, and transparent public safety, they strive to foster a city that prioritizes its people.

Recognizing the urgency of climate change, Foote firmly stands on the premise of taking proactive measures to combat its detrimental effects. Their campaign focuses on implementing sustainable practices and advocating for renewable energy sources, ensuring a healthier and more sustainable future for Des Moines and its residents.

Mandi Remington

City Council, At-Large, Iowa City, IA

Mandi, a resident of Iowa City, brings a unique perspective to her work as a student, renter, small business owner, and single parent. Through her experiences, she has come to understand the vital importance of eliminating barriers and ensuring that all members of the community have equal access to opportunities and resources that are necessary for their success. For Mandi, accessibility extends beyond physical infrastructure and encompasses areas such as affordable housing, food security, transportation, and services.

Mandi firmly believes that true democracy is achieved when every voice is not only heard but also valued and included. She recognizes, however, that many members of the community feel disconnected and disengaged. Drawing from her extensive experience as a member of various influential committees at the University of Iowa and the municipal level, as well as her role as the founder and director of the Corridor Community Action Network, Mandi has consistently proven her ability to bring people together and facilitate meaningful change. KANSAS

Claire Reagan

Board of Education, District 1 — Position 4, Olanthe, KS

Claire brings a diverse range of experiences to her campaign for the Olathe School Board. As a former full-time English teacher, she understands the challenges and rewards of being an educator in today’s classrooms. Currently, she serves as a substitute teacher, allowing her to stay connected to the needs of our students and schools. Additionally, as a parent and advocate for her child with special needs, Claire intimately understands the importance of providing an inclusive and supportive environment for all students.

Growing up in a military family in Nebraska, Claire learned the values of service and education from her parents. Her father, a Vietnam veteran and civil engineer, instilled in her the importance of giving back to one’s community. Her mother, a community advocate and longtime PTA member, demonstrated the power of parent involvement in education. Inspired by their examples, Claire pursued degrees in English and secondary education, and she was drawn to Kansas by the strength of its public schools.

For over a decade, Claire and her husband have proudly called the Olathe School District their home. They chose this community specifically for its outstanding schools, recognizing the impact that a quality education can have on a child’s future. As a member of the Olathe School Board, Claire is committed to ensuring that all students have equal access to the resources and opportunities necessary to succeed. She believes that the key to unlocking a student’s potential lies in having the best teachers and staff in our classrooms.

Sharon Durkan

City Council, District 8, Boston, MA

As the Chair of the Boston Ward 5 Democratic Committee and a seasoned organizer in Boston, Sharon has garnered invaluable insight on the potential that can be unlocked when neighbors unite. Kelly Garcia

City Council, At-Large, Chelsea, MA

Kelly, a native of Chelsea, is a remarkable educator, Chairwoman of the Chelsea School Committee, and a diligent community organizer. With a passion for education, Kelly embarked on her professional journey as a Special Education Teacher, all while pursuing her Master’s Degree from Boston University through Teach For America. Demonstrating her exceptional dedication and aptitude, Kelly became, at the age of 21, the youngest school committee official ever elected in her district.

Through her leadership, she successfully drafted and passed a landmark Safe-Haven Resolution, which protects undocumented students and ensures their safety within the school community. Additionally, Kelly championed several other unanimous resolutions that have positively impacted the education system in Chelsea. She also played a key role in the superintendent search committee, facilitating the hiring of the district’s first Latinx Superintendent and the first-ever Officer of Equity, Diversity, and Excellence.

Emphasizing the significance of equitable practices in education, Kelly co-founded the Equity Committee, a pioneering initiative aimed at addressing and resolving equity issues within our schools. Understanding the importance of career and higher education planning, Kelly also co-founded the College and Career Advisory, a program that fosters awareness and preparedness among students of all grade levels.

Beyond her work in education, Kelly is deeply committed to addressing the challenges faced by the families in her community. As a City Councilor, she tirelessly advocates for their needs, striving to create positive change and improve the quality of life for all.

Joanna Garren

Board of Education, At-Large, Everett, MA

Joanna is a dedicated community member with deep roots in Everett. As a devoted stay-at-home mom of two special needs children, she understands the importance of building strong connections within her community. With a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Hartford and a Master’s of Art Therapy from Albertus Magnus College, Joanna possesses a unique blend of artistic skills and a passion for helping others.

Joanna’s commitment to making a positive impact goes well beyond her immediate family. She has an impressive background of community service, including ten months of rebuilding communities devastated by Hurricane Katrina with the AmeriCorps NCCC program. This experience exposed her to the challenges faced by those affected by natural disasters and further fueled her desire to contribute to the betterment of society.

Throughout her years in Everett, Joanna has actively served on numerous boards, contributing her expertise and creative insights. She has played an integral role on the boards of organizations such as Integral Arts Everett and the Everett Food Policy Council. Her active participation reflects her commitment to fostering a vibrant, inclusive community where everyone can thrive.

Currently, Joanna serves as a valued board member of the Everett Arts and Cultural Council. In this role, she continues to champion the importance of the arts in enhancing the community’s cultural landscape. Joanna’s enthusiasm for the arts, coupled with her educational background, makes her an invaluable asset to the council.

Tom Hendrickson

City Council, At-Large, Agawam, MA

Election Date: Nov 7, 2023

Tom, a 24-year-old lifelong resident of Agawam, is committed to promoting justice, equity, and democracy in our government, economy, and society. With a working-class background as the son of two public school teachers and the grandson of a Teamster’s Union delivery truck driver, he understands the challenges faced by the community.

Since joining the City Council in 2022, Tom has already made a significant impact. His leadership as the lead sponsor of a resolution to initiate Community Energy Aggregation demonstrates his commitment to exploring sustainable energy solutions. Additionally, he has been a staunch defender of voting rights, taking a stand against efforts to reduce early voting and mail-in options. Tom has also been a vocal advocate for Agawam’s infrastructure by supporting investments in its water and sewer systems. Moreover, he has championed various parks and recreation projects, recognizing the importance of enhancing public spaces.

Matt is a distinguished health AI scientist at Harvard Medical School as well as an affordable housing organizer in Medford, Massachusetts. With a track record of success, Matt has already made significant contributions to the community by spearheading the establishment of an Affordable Housing Trust and securing funding for the expansion of a low-income housing complex. Now, he is ready to take on a new challenge as he runs for City Council in Medford.

Drawing upon his expertise and experiences, Matt aims to implement policies that address the urgent need for affordable housing in Medford. He is well aware of the detrimental impact of housing speculation on the community and will actively work towards measures that discourage it. Furthermore, he is passionate about increasing citizen participation in local government and will strive to create policies that enable more individuals to voice their opinions and get involved.

Julio Mejia

Board of Education, Greater Lawrence Technical School Committee, Lawrence, MA

Julio is a dedicated advocate for education and student support in the Greater Lawrence area. As a lifelong resident of Lawrence, Julio understands the unique challenges faced by students in the community and believes that every student deserves access to a high-quality education, as well as physical and mental health resources.

Born at Holy Family Hospital in Methuen, Julio grew up in a close-knit family alongside his mother and stepfather, Felicia and Odalin, and his sister, Alicia. Currently, Julio serves as a Special Assistant to Mayor Brian A. DePeña of Lawrence, Massachusetts, where he actively participates in various community organizations. His involvement spans a wide range of groups, including the Massachusetts Education Justice Alliance, Merrimack Valley YMCA, Semana Hispana en Lawrence, and the Merrimack Valley Project, to name just a few.

Julio’s academic journey began in Lawrence Public Schools, where he received a solid foundation for his future success. Recently, he proudly graduated from Notre Dame Cristo Rey High School in Methuen, and he now embarks on his undergraduate studies at Bentley University. His chosen majors, International Affairs and Business Studies, reflect his passion for global issues and his desire to make a positive impact on both local and international levels.

With his deep commitment to education and community service, Julio is driven to advocate for the rights and well-being of students in the Greater Lawrence area. Through his leadership and determination, he hopes to foster a supportive and inclusive educational environment that empowers students to thrive.

MICHIGAN

Carrie Budzinski

City Council, At-Large, Livonia, MI

Carrie is a lifelong resident of Livonia, where she continues to raise her young boys alongside her husband, Dan. With a solid foundation built through her early employment at the Livonia Public Library, Carrie has risen to the esteemed position of Board Chair of the Library Commission. Currently, she serves as the Chief Operating Officer of LittleGuide Detroit, the premier media outlet for families seeking exciting activities within southeast Michigan. Through her extensive knowledge of regional initiatives, Carrie is committed to preserving Livonia’s status as a thriving and attractive community for both families and businesses.

Drawing from years of experience in political campaigns and constituent services, Carrie previously served as an invaluable member of Senator Carl Levin’s team until his retirement in 2015. This position fostered her deep concern for the needs of residents, equipping her with the expertise to address their queries and provide effective solutions. With an unwavering dedication to her community and astute familiarity with government operations, Carrie possesses the requisite passion and experience for effective leadership.

Believing in the importance of active civic participation and community-building endeavors, Carrie took the initiative to establish Vote.Run.Serve-Livonia, an educational platform. This innovative outlet furnishes residents with easily accessible, unbiased summaries of municipal meetings, issues, and community events. In addition to this remarkable endeavor, Carrie played an instrumental role in launching the Livonia Women’s Connection. This non-partisan networking event series empowers and inspires individuals in the community.

Committed to the principles of democracy and dedicated to cultivating community cohesion, Carrie exemplifies the qualities needed for progress. Her unwavering dedication, combined with her extensive experience and astute understanding of Livonia’s dynamics, make her an invaluable asset in shaping a brighter future for Livonia and its residents.

Spencer Calhoun

City Commission, Mount Clemens, MI

Election Date: Nov 7, 2023

Spencer is a passionate and dedicated individual who has made it his mission to effect positive change and advocate for his community. With a strong background in fostering civic engagement in marginalized communities, he has proven himself as a dynamic leader and a tireless advocate for quality public education, homeless youth, and working families.

Having experienced homelessness as a teenager, Spencer understands firsthand the challenges and struggles faced by vulnerable individuals and families. This personal experience has fueled his drive to make a difference and has led him to coordinate multiple voter registration drives. Through these initiatives, he has empowered marginalized individuals to exercise their right to vote, amplifying their voices and ensuring their concerns are taken into account.

In addition to his community advocacy work, Spencer has also taken on the role of mentor, providing guidance and support to other young leaders in Macomb County. By sharing his experiences and offering assistance, he has helped nurture the growth and development of these emerging leaders, ensuring a stronger, more inclusive future for the community.

Now, Spencer is taking his commitment to the next level by running for a seat on the Mount Clemens City Commission. Seeking to represent over 15,000 of his neighbors, he aims to collaborate with the community in order to find equitable solutions to the various issues facing the city. His key priorities include citywide economic development, the revitalization of outdated infrastructure, and the support and enhancement of the city’s parks, community centers, and neighborhood clubs.

With his unwavering determination, genuine compassion, and deep understanding of the needs of his community, Spencer is well-equipped to make a meaningful impact as a member of the Mount Clemens City Commission. Through his leadership, he envisions a more prosperous and inclusive city for all its residents.

JaWhan Jackson

City Commission, Kentwood, MI

Primary Date: Aug 8, 2023; General Date: Nov 7, 2023

JaWhan is a dedicated resident of West Michigan with a strong work ethic instilled in him by his parents. Born and raised in Grand Rapids, JaWhan grew up witnessing his father’s tireless efforts to provide for the family. His mother, a proud Union Steward at the Post Office, also played a significant role in shaping his understanding of hard work and service.

In 2004, JaWhan made the move to Kentwood and embarked on a career in the Avionics industry. Over the years, he gained valuable experience working for various firms before landing a position at GE Aerospace in 2011. It was there that he became actively involved in the Union, initially serving as the Election Committee Chair. JaWhan’s impressive dedication and ability to connect with his colleagues led to his election as Steward on two separate occasions. Currently, he is proudly serving his third term as President of UAW Local 330.

As Steward, JaWhan consistently demonstrated his commitment to enhancing employee morale and minimizing disruptions in the workplace by resolving disputes and fostering positive relationships among colleagues. During the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic, he worked closely with management to prioritize the safety of the employees.

With extensive experience as a negotiator, JaWhan has achieved numerous victories at the bargaining table. His exceptional problem-solving skills and unwavering support for working-class families have established him as a tenacious advocate for those in need.

In his leisure time, JaWhan cherishes moments spent with his wife Kelly and their three children, Ella, Damyan, and Savannah.

Currently, Taylor holds the position of Deputy Director in the Department of Economic Development for Salt Lake City, where he plays a significant role in driving economic growth and opportunity for the city. Michael is a proud native of the West Kempsville area in Virginia Beach. He was raised in the Virginia Beach Public School system and graduated from Tallwood High School. At the young age of 17, Michael enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, driven by his desire to become an innovative leader. Growing up, Michael was raised by his hardworking mother, who dedicated over 30 years to teaching in public schools, and his father, who served as a firefighter at Norfolk International Airport and retired as a Captain.

Education has always been a priority for Michael, and he has pursued a diverse range of academic achievements. As an alumnus of Park University, VA Tech, Norfolk State, and UVA, he understands the value and significance of both traditional and nontraditional education. After dedicating 20 years to the Air Force, Michael embarked on multiple overseas missions, including an 8-month deployment to the Republic of Kyrgyzstan for Operation Enduring Freedom, providing support to missions in Afghanistan. It was during this time that Michael realized his strong connection to his hometown and made the decision to retire from the military and embark on a new journey as a cybersecurity entrepreneur in Virginia Beach.

With the establishment of the new 97th House District, Michael is compelled to step forward once again to serve his community and offer a fresh perspective. Although Madison initially explored a career in financial planning, he soon realized that his true calling was in education. Having taught at Varina High School and Hermitage High School, Madison now finds himself at James River High School. This extensive experience as an educator has given him valuable insights into the challenges faced by both students and teachers in the classroom.

As a first-generation immigrant from Nigeria, Andrew has overcome adversity and discrimination to reach his current position.

Since arriving in Seattle, Andrew has fully immersed himself in the community, holding influential positions such as the Chair of the Washington Stonewall Democrats, Co-Chair of the Seattle LGBTQ+ Commission, and serving as a board member for both Gay City and the People Of Color Against AIDS Network (POCAAN). As a member of the LGBTQ+ community and someone who is living with HIV, Andrew is incredibly resilient and refuses to let his condition hinder his community service efforts.

Previous experience as a health services manager working closely with the unhoused community has provided Andrew with invaluable insights and understanding of the challenges faced by these vulnerable individuals. Utilizing public transit daily, he recognizes the vital role it plays in shaping the city's transportation infrastructure and is committed to addressing its needs.
