Our frontline defenders are in state and local office. In yet another unprecedented time, we’re proud to announce 37 promising candidates working to create a brighter path forward! Centering our 50 state strategy to protect against extremists attacking our libraries, public schools, and children’s education, 10 of these candidates are running for school board. Additionally, we have our first Virginia State legislature candidate for District 57, Andrew Schear.
With progressives like DNC alum Dom Vargas, affordable housing advocate Matt Leming, an ER doctor and Navy Veteran Dr. Max Cooper, the future is diverse and community-centered. We’re thrilled to introduce the first endorsed candidates of the year, inclusive of 49% LGBTQIA+ and 53% BIPOC individuals.
CALIFORNIA
Oakland City Council District 2

Raised in Oakland’s vibrant Chinatown, this individual has a strong background in public service at various government levels. Their career has been dedicated to enhancing government programs for more effective outcomes. Appointed by the Biden-Harris administration, they lead a $4.2 billion Department of Transportation initiative, Reconnecting Communities and Neighborhoods, with projects in District 2 aimed at improving infrastructures and enhancing community spaces. Passionate about reforming homeless response systems, their goal is to provide quicker assistance to those in need.
Motivated by a personal incident involving a lack of timely public safety response, they decided to pursue a career in politics to address such issues in Oakland. With a focus on creating safer streets, improving economic opportunities, enhancing homeless support systems, and increasing affordable housing options, they are committed to serving District 2 and ensuring a better future for all its residents.
San José City Council, District 3

Anthony is an engineer, housing advocate, and neighborhood leader running for City Council. Raised in a working-class family, he understands the importance of effective government. Anthony was the first in his family to attend college, graduating from Yale University in 2014. With experience as a software engineer at YouTube, he honed skills in problem-solving, data-driven decision-making, and accountability.
Currently, Anthony serves as Chair of the San José Planning Commission, representing District 3. He advocates for policies to enhance affordability, prevent displacement, and streamline housing construction. Anthony contributed significantly to strengthening San José’s 2023–2031 Housing Element to address the housing shortage urgently.
As President of the South University Neighborhood, Anthony brings communities together for various initiatives, from neighborhood clean-ups to supporting public art projects. An advocate for evidence-based leadership, he aims to leverage his diverse experiences to address pressing challenges in San José effectively.

Colorado Springs City Council, District 4

Chauncy Johnson, a 25-year-old native of Colorado Springs, CO, was raised by his great-grandparents, who instilled in him the values of pursuing dreams with a dose of realism. He has garnered valuable experience working at the state capitol for various legislators, driven by a passion for social justice and community advocacy. His time spent marching in protests across the nation and in his own community has inspired him to seek a seat on the city council. Hailing from the City of Miramar and raised by Jamaican immigrants, Kerri-Ann has deep-rooted values in hard work and determination. She has actively contributed to her community, holding positions such as Vice-Chair of the City of Miramar’s Education Advisory Board and leading the Broward County’s Racial Equity Task Force Planning Committee. Committed to making a positive impact, Kerri-Ann is now running for Miramar Commission Seat 4. Rachel is dedicated to promoting responsible use of public resources and financial transparency while collaborating with other board members to achieve shared goals and reduce unnecessary taxpayer spending.
Demonstrating her commitment to activism, Rachel has advocated for LGBTQ rights and community causes, organizing alumni protests and fundraisers to support community organizations. She has served on the Library Board of Trustees since 2017 and the Climate Action Plan committee since 2023, continually seeking ways to contribute to the well-being of Stoughton’s residents.
Medford City Council

Matt is a dedicated health AI scientist and affordable housing advocate based in Medford, Massachusetts. In his first term on City Council, he successfully championed initiatives such as passing Medford’s first override to save jobs in the public school system, updating the linkage fee schedule to support the Affordable Housing Trust, and creating programs to assist veteran renters in securing housing.
Drawing on his expertise, Matt is committed to implementing policies that address the pressing need for affordable housing in Medford. He is focused on combating housing speculation to protect the community and fostering citizen engagement by hosting community listening sessions and improving tech practices by livestreaming City Council meetings on Youtube.

Dr. Max Cooper, an ER doctor, Navy Veteran, Healthcare activist, and Township Commissioner from Delco, PA, is a candidate for County Council with a focus on rebuilding the healthcare landscape in the county. His experience as an ER doctor in Afghanistan and his tenure as a township commissioner have equipped him to address the healthcare crisis in Delco, especially in the wake of the financial troubles at Crozer Health. Max is dedicated to supporting critical healthcare systems, such as Crozer, and developing regional solutions for Emergency Medical Services and psychiatric infrastructure. With a background in public service and a deep commitment to healthcare advocacy, Max is uniquely positioned to lead the county council during this crucial period of rebuilding.
Outside of his political endeavors, Max co-founded the Committee To Protect Healthcare, where he analyzes policy and budgets to advocate for prescription drug affordability, universal health coverage, and reproductive freedoms at the state level. Danielle is a dedicated member of the Scranton School Board, running for re-election to continue advocating for students and the community.
