Summer’s ending, but our commitment to supporting down-ballot candidates is far from over! We’re so excited to share 49 new progressive candidates who will be instrumental in impacting results at the state and local level during this election season. RFS is proud to endorse yet another diverse class of candidates, comprised of 47% POC, 49% women and 35% LGBTQIA+ across 26 states.

Nicholas Gonzales

State House, District 13, AZ

Nicholas is an entrepreneur, community planner, and father from Chandler, currently running for State Legislature in LD13. With roots in Chandler, he prioritizes restoring reproductive freedom and affordable housing in Arizona. Nicholas, a strong advocate for economic development and education, believes in sustaining Arizona’s thriving economy.

Cyndall Hill

City Council, Ward 4 Position 2, Rogers City, AR

Cyndall, a long-time Northwest Arkansas resident, boasts a finance background from Walmart and Sam’s Club. She is a dedicated wife and mother of three, deeply involved in community volunteering. Overcoming early challenges as a teen mother working her way through college, Cyndall empathizes with local families’ struggles and seeks to advocate for their needs effectively in Rogers.

Cyndall’s passion for positive change drives her campaign focused on smart growth, affordable housing, sustainability, and disaster preparedness in Rogers. Eli Clardy

Justice of the Peace, District 12, Crawford County, AR

Richard Hurt

City Council, District 3, Aliso Viejo, CA

Since 2020, Richard has been a dedicated member of the Aliso Viejo City Council and proudly served as Mayor in 2023. Under Richard’s leadership, the community has seen tangible improvements, particularly in enhancing public safety to maintain Aliso Viejo’s reputation as one of California’s safest cities. He has been a champion for local businesses, successfully highlighting their achievements each month.

During Richard’s tenure, significant initiatives have been approved, such as implementing term limits for council members and advocating for contribution limits, reflecting his commitment to ethical governance. Richard has also prioritized building strong relationships with community stakeholders and residents to ensure that local priorities guide council decisions.

Joint Unified School District Trustee, Area 2, Woodland, CA

Laura has dedicated the past 5 years to advocating for students in special education within her community. She played a key role in saving a preschool program for autistic students by uniting with parents to lobby the public school district. During the pandemic, she organized a weekly food distribution from her front lawn to combat food insecurity in her neighborhood. Laura actively served on school committees to ensure that all students were prioritized in decision-making processes. She also led a successful recall of a school board trustee who attempted to sow division with extremist views.

Coming from a family of educators, Laura recognizes the importance of public schools in fostering healthy communities. Her goals include developing innovative approaches to address the youth mental health crisis, advocating for improvements in special education, and promoting equity for all students in her community.

Bryan “Bubba” Fish

City Council, At-Large, Culver City, CA

Primary Date: Nov 5, 2024; General Date: Nov 5, 2024

Bubba is a dedicated public servant and LGBTQ+ leader committed to creating safe and inclusive communities. With a background in improving street safety and accessibility, he currently serves as a Transportation Deputy for Metro Board Chair and LA County Supervisor Janice Hahn. Previously, he worked in Government Affairs at the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT), focusing on expanding transit services and addressing traffic-related issues.

As an LGBTQ+ advocate, Bubba co-founded Culver City’s official Pride celebration, promoting diversity and sustainability. Involved in housing and homelessness initiatives, he served as the Vice Chair of the Housing & Homelessness Committee in Culver City, advocating for affordable housing solutions.

Bubba holds a Masters in Public Policy with a concentration in Urban Policy from UCLA’s Luskin School of Public Affairs. Running for City Council, he hopes to address housing challenges and represent the LGBTQ+ community. Bubba resides in East Culver City with his husband, Aaron, and their dog, Walter. If elected, he would be the city’s second openly LGBTQ+ Councilmember and the youngest on the Council.

Avery Arbaugh

Rent Control Board, At-Large, Berkeley, CA

Primary Date: Nov 5, 2024; General Date: Nov 5, 2024

Avery, a dedicated community organizer, has a background in advocating for workers, tenants, and climate justice. Their experience includes serving as President of the Cal Berkeley Democrats, where they fought for fair contracts for UAW student workers and advocated for affordable housing. Avery also played a key role in drafting legislation for the Berkeley City Council to improve democratic access to policy-making.

As a Labor Commissioner for the City of Berkeley, Avery has been instrumental in monitoring the implementation of pro-worker policies and supporting workers facing unfair labor practices. With a focus on tenant rights, Avery’s role as a member of the Berkeley Rent Board will involve advocating for strong rent control measures and protections for tenants in the city.

Avery is a firm believer in the need to address the affordability crisis for non-rent-controlled tenants and protect rent-controlled units in Berkeley. They are passionate about repealing Costa-Hawkins and safeguarding affordable housing units. Furthermore, Avery is committed to defending the independence of the Berkeley Rent Stabilization Board against efforts by corporate landlords to weaken tenant protections.

Jessie Lopez

City Council, Ward 3, Santa Ana, CA

Jessie, a proud Santa Ana native, is deeply rooted in her community due to her upbringing in a working-class immigrant family. After graduating from Santa Ana College and obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from California State University, Long Beach, she held various roles in law firms and nonprofits. Throughout her career, she has been a passionate advocate for issues such as sexual assault awareness and equitable access to education. During the pandemic, Jessie dedicated her efforts as a community health worker, focusing on the well-being of marginalized groups, especially within the Latino community.

Elected in 2020 to represent Ward 3, Jessie has been a vocal proponent of equity and transparency in local governance. Despite facing a recall campaign led by the police association in 2023, she emerged victorious due to her unwavering dedication to accountability. Jessie’s commitment to civic engagement extends to her involvement as a central committee member in the Democratic Party of Orange County, where she strives to promote equal opportunities and community empowerment. With a proven track record of effective leadership, Jessie continues to uplift and advocate for Santa Ana families, believing in the power of inclusive and participatory governance. Alfred Twu

Rent Control Board, At-Large, Berkeley, CA

Alfred is a licensed architect with a background in affordable housing projects in Berkeley and neighboring areas. With a focus on ensuring housing standards are met, Alfred strives to create safe, habitable, accessible, and energy-efficient living spaces for all. Serving on Berkeley’s Planning Commission, they advocate for protecting existing apartments while promoting the development of new homes to achieve a balanced jobs-housing environment.

During their time as a student at Cal in the early 2000s, Alfred resided in the Berkeley Student Cooperative and managed maintenance for one of the houses. They later delved into housing and transportation advocacy, co-founding organizations such as the California Democratic Renters Council and East Bay for Everyone to champion tenant rights and housing initiatives.

Alongside their architectural career, Alfred operates an illustration and design business. A Berkeley tenant since 2002, they have resided in various types of housing. Drawing inspiration from being a first-generation American, Alfred strongly believes in Berkeley’s future potential and the leading role California can play in shaping the nation’s trajectory.

Andrea Galván

City Council, At-Large, Ontario, CA

Andrea, a candidate for Ontario City Council, is a dedicated community member with a passion for creating a more equitable city for future generations. Corey Givens Jr.

City Council, District 7, St. Petersburg, FL

Corey, a fourth-generation native of St. Petersburg, FL, is a graduate of the University of South Florida St. Petersburg, holding a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Communications. KANSAS

Eli Woody

State House, District 33, KS

Eli, a former teacher, now works for an educational nonprofit engaging middle and high school students in competitive speech and debate. Raised in Northeast Kansas, Eli frequented the local Boys and Girls Club where his father served as the Executive Director. Tom Haggard

School Board, Covington, KY

Tom has devoted his career to advocating for the needs of children in Covington and throughout Kentucky. A third-generation Covington resident and a proud graduate of Covington Schools, he is seeking re-election to the Covington Board of Education.

Tom’s objectives for Covington schools are clear — he believes children deserve schools that are outstanding, involved, and fair. By setting high standards and fostering a culture of excellence, he aims to ensure that every graduating senior can pursue their chosen path to success. MARYLAND

Zakyia Goins-McCants

County Public School Board, District 8, Prince George’s, MD

Zakyia is a seasoned educator with a deep passion for ensuring educational excellence and equity for all students. With over a decade of experience in the field, she has served as a classroom teacher, teacher-leader, coach, and data manager within District 8 schools. Zakyia is also recognized for her work in advocating for education policy changes at local, state, and national levels.

Currently, Zakyia uses her extensive expertise to support school leaders in utilizing data-driven strategies to improve student outcomes. She holds a Bachelor’s degree from Howard University and a Master’s degree in Administration & Supervision from Johns Hopkins University School of Education.

MICHIGAN

Justin Sheldon

Township Supervisor, Grand Rapids, MI

Previously, Benjamin served as Senior Advisor and Campaign Manager for Cheri Beasley, the first African American woman to hold the position of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of North Carolina.
